The 'L' is one of the oldest metro systems in the world, in service since 1892, and the third busiest in the country by ridership, after New York and Washington DC, which makes it one of the most operationally complex.
The pilot was awarded to CITEF through an international call for proposals under CTA's Innovation Studio programme, launched in 2024 to trial technological solutions to the challenges facing public transport today.
Being selected is a source of pride and a significant responsibility for CITEF. We are committed to building a simulator that captures that complexity and becomes a genuinely useful training tool. The joint work between CITEF and CTA will lay the groundwork for a new training model, one that will allow train operators to practise operational and critical scenarios that cannot be reproduced in revenue service — improving both efficiency and safety.
