Services and products for the railway sector

CITEF develops innovative services and products in the railway sector.

Training simulators

CITEF has developed its own platforms for the generation of simulation-based training systems, specially designed for the operation of all types of rail transport.

These systems reproduce the working conditions of the students in normal operating situations and especially in degraded conditions, which helps to develop the necessary skills to perform their work, by improving the safety and efficiency of the operation.

Driving, traffic control, operation and maintenance

Driving simulators intended for initial training, reinforcement of knowledge and/or evaluation of skills in the entire railway spectrum: high-speed, freight, suburban, heavy metro, light metro, trams...

They are training tools that faithfully reproduce, by means of simulation, the work environment of traffic control operators, and which include the line under control, train traffic, signaling systems, interlocks, etc.

Training simulators for handling specific maintenance machinery, such as tamping machines, with reproduction of all the positions involved in maintenance activities for the training of work teams and their tasks.

Verification and validation V&V

Verification and validation environments for railway systems, especially train control and protection systems, based on simulation technologies that allow the integration of real hardware devices in the simulation (hardware in the loop).

In this way, we achieve that the operation of the real equipment is as if it were installed in the real system, by reproducing all the interfaces and their behavior.

With these systems, it is possible to check the normal and degraded operation of the integrated equipment, which saves a great amount of time, man-hours, energy and helps the most efficient and safe commissioning of the system.

CCO, ERTMS/CBTC and automation

Test systems for Operations Control Centers (CCO) consisting of connecting the real CCO to a simulation of the line, the field elements, the interlocks, the traffic and the rest of the integrated systems and performing tests in normal and degraded operation of the system.

Test bench for real equipment of the most modern train control and protection systems, where both on-board equipment and line control equipment can be integrated, and tested in a complete and dynamic simulation environment, both at individual equipment and system level integrated.

The verification and validation environments allow the automation of the tests so that batteries of previously defined scenarios are developed autonomously and also automatically generating a report with the results of each of the tests. In this way, the development of acceptance tests, non-regression tests, etc., is greatly facilitated, generating exhaustive documentation of the process and saving a great deal of time and man-hours.

Development of R&D activities in the area of railway systems: track, rolling stock, signaling systems, energy systems, communications... Also in the areas of operation and maintenance of railways and subways.

Projects, patents and publications

Since its creation, at CITEF we have participated, both in national and European calls, in research projects related to railways, among which are: 2TRAIN, INESS, SIMAFE, SMARTWAY, Light Rail Simulator, SELF...

Additionally, international patents have been developed for components for railway systems: rigid catenary, disconnectors, escalators, simulation components...

Whenever possible, the research results are published in prestigious international journals and conferences such as Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, Transport, Journal of Advanced Transportation, Vehicle System Dynamics, Simulation, Journal of Transport Engineering, COMPRAIL...

Studies and developments

As a result of the knowledge created of the various railway systems and components, CITEF carries out studies and generates specific developments in collaboration with its clients.

Railway dynamics, operation and energy

Based on multibody models of the rolling stock under study, simulation analyzes of the running dynamics are carried out with special attention to the wheel-rail and pantograph-catenary interfaces.

Railway line operation studies to know all the operational variables and be able to improve their engineering and operation: travel times, fleet, operating interval, train consumption, offline planning...

Analysis of the energy dimensioning of railway lines and its optimization, both with direct current and alternating current, in 1x and 2x systems, with a study of nominal and degraded operating conditions: extreme voltages, maximum intensities, powers, rail-ground voltages, etc. 

Operation and maintenance improvements and custom developments

Own specific developments oriented to the study of the operating conditions of existing railway lines and the improvement of their operation and maintenance. These include energy efficiency systems for driving, registration systems focused on the analysis of comfort and safety and the identification of critical points on the track, computer vision train detection systems, etc.

Customized software and/or hardware developments for our clients, focused on improving the design and operation and maintenance of railway systems.
